Ephesians 6:10-17 Armor of God

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

We are looking at different ways the five temperaments can:

“Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11

In this issue, we will continue with the Helmet of Salvation.

Temperament Corner

JESUS IS YOUR HELMET OF SALVATION – a protective armor from the thoughts which would confuse and distract you.

In your soul (mind area) and spirit, symbolically you need to place this helmet on your head.  You need to see the helmet as JESUS PROTECTING YOUR THOUGHTS. You need to entrust your every thought to Jesus’ care.

It is when you lay your helmet down or fail to put it on, that Satan can penetrate your thoughts.

Matthew Henry said: “Salvation must be our helmet; that is hope, which has salvation for its object. Hope keeps us trusting in God.”

The helmet is a source of our total deliverance.  Jesus can deliver us from our spiritual, emotional and physical distress. He is our Source.

Theodore Epp stated in his book Living Abundantly: Helmet

“To take the helmet of salvation is to recognize Jesus Christ as the very life of our salvation.”

“One of Satan’s key attacks in the area of salvation is to cause the believer to doubt his salvation. However, 1 John 5:11-12 assures an individual that if he has Jesus Christ, he has eternal life.”

Satan concentrates many of his attacks at the believer’s hope of salvation.

OUR TRUST MUST BE IN CHRIST, NOT ONLY FOR SALVATION, BUT ALSO FOR HIS ABILITY TO CARRY OUR SALVATION THROUGH TO THE END.

WHAT DOES “PUTTING ON THE HELMET OF SALVATION” MEAN TO THE CHOLERIC?

1.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they know that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life and that they may obtain eternal life through Him. Often they are tempted to believe that they can do it on their own.  Satan whispers in their ear, “You don’t need Jesus; you can do it! You are powerful enough!”

“…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”  John 14:6

2.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they know that Jesus will bring into captivity their every thought. Satan whispers in their ear, “You don’t want to submit your life to Jesus and have Him receive all of your recognition for your accomplishments.  You deserve all the credit!”

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” II Corinthians 10:5

“Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.” Proverbs 16:3

3. Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they know that Jesus is their Hope and they can trust Him; they can trust Jesus to keep His word. To a Choleric, it is important that a person keep their word; if they do not keep their word, the Choleric tends to hold them in disdain. Satan whispers in their ear, “You can’t trust Jesus; you cannot trust anyone but yourself!”

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8

4. Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they know that they can resist Satan’s darts causing them to doubt their salvation. Satan whispers in their ear, “You are an imposter and Jesus would never trust you enough to bring you to salvation!”  This is because Cholerics can become whoever they need to be to accomplish their goals and, at times, they are not sure who they really are.

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7b

WHAT DOES “PUTTING ON THE HELMET OF SALVATION” MEAN TO THE MELANCHOLY?

1.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can be secure in knowing that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life and that they may obtain eternal life through Him.  Satan whispers in their ear, “You should doubt your salvation. You are not good enough!” This is because Satan knows that they are insecure and that they believe they have no real value.

“…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23b

2.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can be secure in knowing that Jesus will bring into captivity their every thought. Satan whispers in their ear, “Remember, remember, remember!” He tries to keep them remembering and replaying past hurts.

“And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice.” Ephesians 4:23 and 31

3.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that this is their hope and they can trust Jesus to keep His word. They have a difficult time in trusting Jesus.  Satan whispers in their ear, “Don’t put your trust in Jesus; put your trust in yourself!”

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah 26:3

 4. Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they no longer need to “measure up” to their own standards of perfection—Jesus will do the perfecting.  Satan whispers in their ear, “You can never measure up to Jesus’ standards!”

Joy

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah 29:11

WHAT DOES “PUTTING ON THE HELMET OF SALVATION” MEAN TO THE PHLEGMATIC?

1.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can be secure in knowing that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life and that they may obtain eternal life through Him. Satan will use their self-protectiveness as a way of distracting them.  He will whisper in their ear, “You need to protect your energy!”

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” I John 5:13

2.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that Jesus will bring into captivity their every thought. Satan whispers doubts in their ear, “Don’t bother trying to do good deeds.  Can’t you see, you are always too tired? You need to take care of yourself!”

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:5-7

3.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that Jesus is their Hope and they can trust Him; they can trust Jesus to keep His word. They know that Jesus has their best interest at heart and that He will give them the strength they need to do His work for the Kingdom. Satan will whisper in their ear, “You can’t put your hope and trust in Jesus. He will wear you out.  You will be exhausted if you follow Him!”

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” Isaiah 40:29

Peace

 4. Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can resist Satan’s darts which cause them to doubt their salvation.  Satan whispers in their ear, “You could never measure up to Jesus’ expectations.  You are too stubborn and immovable; you are lazy, worthless and selfish. Jesus would never want you!”

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38

WHAT DOES “PUTTING ON THE HELMET OF SALVATION” MEAN TO THE SANGUINE?

1. Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can be secure in knowing that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life and that they may obtain eternal life through Him. Satan will whisper in their ear, “You don’t need Jesus.  You are wonderful; everybody loves you, even Jesus loves you! You don’t need salvation!”

“Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.”” Psalm 86:11

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

2. Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can be secure in knowing that Jesus will bring into captivity their every thought. Satan whispers in their ear, “Jesus would not want somebody like you because you are irresponsible, unproductive and you exaggerate!”

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” I John 4:4

“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.” John 15:15

3.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that Jesus is their Salvation and their Hope and that they can trust Jesus to keep His word.  Satan whispers in their ear, “You don’t keep your word, so how could you trust Jesus to keep His word?”

Love

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.” Psalm 84:11-12

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8

4.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can resist Satan’s darts causing them to edify self. Satan whispers in their ear, “You should be the center of attention, not Jesus; live your life for yourself—you’re a good person! Salvation has a lot of rules and boundaries and you should be free to do what you want to do!”

“And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.  And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.  I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.  He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” Revelation 21:5-7

WHAT DOES “PUTTING ON THE HELMET OF SALVATION” MEAN TO THE SUPINE?

1.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can be secure in knowing that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life and that they may obtain eternal life through Him. Satan will whisper in their ear, “You can never be sure that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.  How do you know for sure?” Satan will use their need for constant reassurance to distract them from their salvation.

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” John 6:47

2.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can be secure in knowing that Jesus will bring into captivity their every thought. Satan whispers in their ear, “You are inadequate and worthless!” They will become anxious and insecure. They feel that Jesus could see no good in them, only their shortcomings; however, they want to trust Him—they want to know that He really loves them.

“Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:31

“For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5c

3.  Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that Jesus is their Hope and they can trust Him; they can trust Jesus to keep His word.   Satan whispers in their ear, “How can you be sure that Jesus will keep His word?” They tend to run with Satan’s negative thoughts because they feel they cannot trust anyone—they want to know that they can trust Jesus.

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2

4. Putting on the Helmet of Salvation means that they can resist Satan’s darts which cause them to doubt their salvation. Satan whispers to them the “what ifs.” “What if you commit your life to Jesus and He really does not want you?” “What if you have no right to take up space on planet earth?” “What if, What if, What if….” Supines are very sensitive to rejection so they need to learn that Jesus puts the desires in their heart.  If they desire Him as their Savior and want to live for Him, it is because He placed this desire in their heart.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.  I and my Father are one.”   John 10:27-29
